About the Artist

Mark Purves (born 1982, Edinburgh) creates paintings that challenge the traditional flatness of the painted surface. With a background in sculpture, his practice brings together painting and embedded objects, incorporating materials such as marble spheres, chandelier droplets and found objects to blur the boundary between image and object.

Working from photographs and collected imagery, Purves explores themes of absence, memory and perception through layered and materially complex surfaces. His work also transforms familiar human movements and behaviours into psychological spaces, revealing the tensions, intentions and relationships that can exist beneath everyday social interactions.

Through this combination of image, object and material, Purves creates paintings that invite the viewer to look beyond the surface and consider what may be concealed within it.
