David Iain Brown is a Glasgow-based artist whose practice explores the relationship between painting, process, and material transformation. A graduate of Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen (BA (Hons), MA Fine Art), Brown began his career in printmaking before developing an expanded approach to contemporary painting.
Working with the residue of the studio—including torn rags, discarded paintings, and salvaged textiles—he creates layered abstract compositions that place process at the centre of the work. His practice is shaped by cycles of destruction and renewal, with materials continuously reworked and reimagined into new forms.
Balancing control with chance, Brown's paintings reveal richly textured surfaces that are both contemplative and materially complex, contributing to an evolving dialogue within contemporary abstraction.
