Bjørn Rune

Bjørn Rune Lie is a Norwegian artist based in a small fishing village in Fife, Scotland.

He has worked as an illustrator for over 20 years (for a plethora of international clients), but personal work and experimentation have always been central to his practice.

His “Flamboyant Flowers” series is a vehicle for him to simply explore (and get lost in) different processes and forms of mark making without worrying too much about composition or concept or storytelling. Rather, he looks at them almost as “two-dimensional sculptures” that have a certain physicality and a certain “feel” to them. Although the finished pieces look fairly polished, the process is all about taking risks and embracing the unpredictable in the quest for happy accidents.

Combining techniques like paper marbling and balloon printing, rubber stamps and pochoir stencilling Bjorn creates strange and otherworldly, beautiful and perhaps slightly seedy looking “botanical illustrations” that draws inspiration from ceramic art, “natural curiosities” (Ernst Haeckel and Albertus Seba) and outsider art.
